CSS Layout for Websites — Why Using CSS in Web Design Layout is Better than Table-based Layout
Technology is constantly evolving and moving forward and nothing demonstrates this more than the (short) history of the Web. Just a few years ago, the internet is full of websites with blinking, animated icons and background midi music, and lots of people thought it was really good. Advance a few years, and although you can still see these things every now and then, on the web is now much more sophisticated elements as video, RSS feeds, detailed Flash animations and much more. As “ideas” about what a website is and what it should or could do for a business has also changed, designers have sought to streamline the process of developing Web sites and make them more efficient and predictable. Since different browsers interpret code differently, it has not always been easy to make complex Web sites look the same (or even good in some cases) of browsers and systems. What used to work at the beginning of the web was no longer working the way web designers wanted or needed it to. Cascading Style Sheets to RescueCascading Style Sheets, also known as CSS, was introduced to improve the capabilities of web presentation. Before CSS, almost all HTML attributes that made up “look and feel of a Web page contained within the HTML directly. This web page code was cumbersome and often quite clunky. Using Cascading Style Sheets, designers were able to separate design elements from content on a web page and thereby make the pages more efficient, smoother and easier to maintain. Not all designers jumped on the CSS bandwagon, and even today, many designers still prefer to layout their web pages with HTML table-based design, however, almost all used to do it. Using CSS for layout a Web page is completely different than “old fashioned” table. But the advantages of using a CSS layout for a web site far outweigh the arguments given to using HTML tables. Although I do not expect clients to know the intricate details of Cascading Style Sheets (and let’s face it, most customers do not want to know much of anything about it!), I believe that customers should be aware of the advantages of using CSS layouts and how they can improve their sites, both now and in the future. Advantages of using CSS for Web layout Web pages loaded fasterNo you want to wait for pages to load and if a page takes too long to download, many users often simply leave. Overall, CSS-based layouts require much less HTML coding than table-based layouts. This usually results in pages loading faster. In addition, an externally linked CSS file, when loaded the first time, do not have to be reloaded and read on every page. When you use CSS for layout, the browser cache (keep in mind), all formatting and stylizing for your pages instead of reading and interpreting each style tag on each page. This can also result in much quicker time before the page loads. Visual impact within pagesOne of forces using Cascading Style Sheets on a site layout is that design elements can be defined in one place (css file) and will be automatically applied to those parts of the site. No longer does each side need to be updated to reflect the new style. This allows much greater uniformity across the field. With CSS, you do not need the new number every element on every page (and check and double check that you do not miss any pages!), Styling updates automatically and the entire site. Accessibility and usabilityCSS allow more interactive style elements, including font sizes and line heights, which can make Web pages more usable for people with disabilities. A Web page that uses CSS layout is often more compatible with more browsers. What else can designers create specific CSS files specific to type, or mobile devices, as well as standard PC monitor, making websites truly multimedia applications. CSS is better for SEOSince pages load faster with CSS layouts can help search engines crawl the site. Also, since there is often less coding on the pages and CSS to different design elements from content, it is easier for search engines to determine what a page is about, and to index it properly. Finally, the robots rely heavily on organizational structure (header (H1, H2, H3, etc) tags) and CSS allows designers to develop the necessary elements and placing them within the page layout in a way that is most advantageous for search engine optimization. Future redesigns will be more efficient (read, cheaper!) Since CSS layouts separate design elements from the content, when a site has been designed using Cascading Style Sheets, making changes to the design is often easier because fewer files need to be updated (usually only css files instead of every page on your site!) This allows faster and less expensive design changes in the future. Set your site up with CSS now, and you may get simpler, more efficient and faster updates in the future.
Setting Up WordPress Permalinks to Maximize Search Engine Rankings
WordPress has become one of the most popular content management systems and blogging platforms for many people in today’s connected world, rivaled only Typepad (another content management system) because of the Typepad mobile blogging capabilities. Among the features that make WordPress so popular is the simple interface and secure environment, but when it comes to making money with your WordPress blog, you will want to rely on plugins and extensions to maximize traffic, search engine rankings and profit potential. What you will learn in this article is the concept of a link as it applies to your WordPress blog, and how you can adjust this feature to gain more control over how your site address is shown, how a search engine spider will in every single page, and also how to use keywords in the right way to serve the highest paying contextual ads (using Google’s Adsense program for example). First, what is a permalink? Well that is exactly as it sounds, it is a permanent link in a post to your blog. To understand the concept behind permalinks, it is important to understand exactly what a CMS does and why it can be so much easier than running a traditional HTML site. In brief, the purpose behind a content management system (CMS) to completely separate content from layout, and to provide a simple interface where it is easy to add new content. It is also important to note that the structure of a blog is different than a traditional HTML site, while the traditional sites new content will be added through “deep linking” new content on a blog shows up directly on the front page. This is why the permalinks are important because your message will be displayed on the first page of your blog only temporary and it must have a solid relationship, too. There are many different criteria you can use when you make your permalink structure, and this is where search engine optimization and relevant high-paying Adsense ads come into the picture. One of the biggest factors in search engine algorithms and contextual ad serving technology is the file name, and therefore it is important to create a link structure for your WordPress blog which will contain relevant keywords prechosen your title. The default Permalink structure (depending on your version of WordPress) will either simply numbering each record sequentially, or it will be the date of service. This does not say a spider search engine, all relevant information about your messages, and as such, your pages will typically within less in all types of hypertext-based search engine. What you need to do to make your WordPress Entries search engine friendly is to make your permalinks show post title and any category title and select service and category titles that contain keywords relevant to your topic. You can optimize your pages for high paying Adsense ads by determining which keywords are paying the most per click, and then use these keywords in your posts and articles category.
